We have a propensity to overrate ourselves as a species a great deal of the time. And now, please read this absolutely horrifying article (it actually takes on a humorous and surreal quality if we distance ourselves and look at it as entertainment -- but the revelation of just who we are and just what we are absolutely capable of sinks in when you contemplate that every one of this experiments took place with real Human subjects, and was designed by real Human experimenters and operators) and develop a greater respect and fear about the inherent potential of our species to destroy itself if due care is not exercised

Sadism frightens me. But disconnection and indifference are the two things which truly chase me down alleyways and corridors in my worst nightmares. In particular, read about Milgram's experiments with people's indifference to the pain which they "inflicted" upon Human test subjects when they were told to do so by an authoritative-looking fellow in a lab coat.
